What Is Pico Toning?

Gentle, Precise Pigment Clearing

Pico lasers deliver energy in ultra-short pulses — measured in picoseconds, far faster than older nanosecond lasers — which shatters pigment into much finer particles with less heat transferred to surrounding skin. That translates into effective pigment clearing with virtually no downtime, making it one of the gentlest options in our pigmentation and whitening category.

Pico toning is best suited to diffuse, overall dullness and mild-to-moderate pigmentation across large areas — freckle-like spots, uneven tone, and early sun damage — rather than a single stubborn dark spot, which is often better addressed with our Spot & Sun Damage Removal treatment.

Because each session is gentle, results build gradually over a course of treatments rather than all at once — most patients see a brighter, more even complexion developing session by session.

  • No downtime — return to routine immediately
  • Evens overall tone, not just single spots
  • Gentle enough for a regular maintenance series
  • Also improves skin texture and mild dullness

What to Expect

Your Session & Recovery Timeline

Consultation & Skin Analysis

Your doctor examines your pigmentation pattern and skin type to confirm pico toning is the right fit and to map out your recommended course length.

Treatment (20–30 Minutes)

The pico laser is passed evenly across the treatment area; most patients describe a mild snapping or tingling sensation. Topical numbing is available on request.

Day 0–1

Skin may look slightly pink or have a light frosted appearance for a few hours; gentle skincare and sun protection are recommended immediately after.

Day 2–5

Very fine, sand-like flaking may appear as pigment particles rise to the surface and shed naturally — this is expected and not a cause for concern.

Across the Course

Tone becomes progressively brighter and more even with each session; most patients repeat sessions every 2–4 weeks for a full course of 3–5 treatments.

Common Questions

Pico Toning — FAQ

How many sessions will I need?

Most patients see meaningful brightening after a course of 3 to 5 sessions, spaced 2–4 weeks apart. Your doctor will recommend the exact number based on the depth and extent of your pigmentation.

Is there really no downtime?

Most patients return to normal activities immediately, with only mild pinkness for a few hours. Some fine flaking can occur over the following days, but it's typically not visible enough to interrupt makeup or daily routine.

How is this different from Q-Switched Laser Toning?

Both break down pigment, but pico's shorter pulse duration is gentler and better suited to overall tone-evening and maintenance. Q-Switched Laser Toning uses a slightly different wavelength profile better suited to stubborn, well-defined sunspots. Your doctor can advise which — or both — fits your skin.

Can I combine this with other treatments?

Yes — pico toning is commonly paired with a Brightening Chemical Peel for a more complete brightening effect, or layered into a broader skin quality plan with skin boosters.

Is this safe for international patients on a short trip?

A single session works well for a short trip with essentially no downtime, though the fullest results build across a multi-session course. Many international patients start a course here and continue on a return visit — see our International Patients page for planning support.
